Corona Virus and Homeschooling

It is late March and the last few weeks have been unprecedented for our family and for the rest of the world.  The Corona Virus, which originated in China in January, has now spread like wild fire throughout the world, affecting hundreds of thousands.  As of today, the number of cases in the United States grows rapidly each day and hundreds of people are dying daily in our country alone.  All schools have been shut down for 2 weeks and and currently scheduled to be shut down for at least 3 more weeks - we are home schooling.  All non essential businesses have shut down and people are losing their jobs.  No masses or church services are being held - even Easter mass will need to be streamed and watched from home.  There's a panic in the stores and you cannot find toilet paper, hand soap or sanitizers any where.  We are mandated to practice "social distancing" which means not congregating with anyone other than our own family in our homes,  avoiding public places as much as possible, and maintaining 6 feet distance from others.  Our health care systems are being taxed and MASH style tents are being set up to screen patients along with pop up hospitals and drive through screening tests.  It's a scary time.  We all feel anxious about the unknown and the possibilities.  Shawn is surrounded by it at his hospital.  Henry's teacher was hospitalized for 10 days with the virus - as a result our family had to be on a 14 day quarantine.

We, as a family are praying diligently for an end to the spread, a cure to be found, and lives to be saved.  In the mean time, we are trying to use this extra family time to grow in faith and quality time with one another.  We've been taking lots of family hikes and walks as well as bike rides.  The boys have been working on a lot of their scouting requirements from home and we are playing lots of games, puzzles and crafts.  We've witnessed so many kind acts all around us.  We may never fully understand why God lets bad things happen, but we can see how He can bring much good from it.

Discovering new hiking trails together as a family
Home schooling - this has been no joke!  The kids work from 8:30 to about 3 or 4 each day with just a break or two.  Their teachers use Zoom to teach an hour or two per day and the rest of the day is mostly online learning lessons and programs, as well as projects, etc.  It's been a big adjustment for all of us!

It's the first day of spring and we are home schooling, so why not read on the back deck!

More bike riding
Nicholas' scout den had a virtual campout - he and Henry camped in the back yard and then live streamed for a bit to say hello to friends also doing the same in their yards.

May we know we are not alone.  God is with us.  May we turn to God right now in our time of need.  May we bring the suffering of our world-wide community into God's loving care. May God's healing and grace shower down upon us, especially those who are sick. May our weak and vulnerable be protected.
May we ask God how we are called to respond, to act, and to move forward. May God make our paths known to us.   May we know how to tend to and care for those who are sick and impacted.  May we seek shelter and refuge in the arms of the One who loves us and offers us mercy. May all who have experienced loss be comforted.  May we hope in you, O Lord.  Amen

Odyssey of the Mind

This is Nicholas' third year being on an Odyssey of the Mind team and Grace's first year.  They are each on different teams and have really been enjoying it so far this year.  It's a huge time commitment - weekly meetings all school year long,  and then from January on there have been lots of weekend sessions in addition to projects they work on at home.  But they have learned a lot, from using power tools, to building zip lines and robots, to trying 3 different ways to make a costume, to team work and problem solving, it's been a good and full experience so far.  All this work is put forth to prepare for competition.  The regional competition was held the first weekend in March.  Grace's team competed in the Division 1 networking problem and earned second place!!  Nicholas' team competed in the Division 1 balsa wood problem and also won second place!  Our school had 7 teams in all and everyone of them did well enough to make it to the next round - State Competition, which is absolutely amazing.  Unfortunately the State competition had to be cancelled due to the Corona Virus outbreak.  We are currently praying for an end to the spread of Covid 19, for all obvious reasons and most important reasons, but also in hopes that all the kids' hard work in Odyssey can perhaps be showcased again at competition...

Nicholas, AKA, the Monopoly boot, is explaining to the judge how he tried to make his costume 3 different ways before he came up with something that would work.

From Cub Scout to Boy Scout...

Nicholas officially completed all ranks of Cub Scouts!  At the Blue and Gold Banquet in late February, he was awarded the Arrow of Light - the highest rank in Cub Scouts.  To commemorate the event we, his parents, made and presented him a shadow box to include all his achievements in scouting.  It has been great program for Nicholas and he's both enjoyed it and learned a great deal.  He says his goal to be become an Eagle Scout, so he has officially "crossed over" and joined the Boy Scout Pack.  We look forward to see the future adventures scouting takes him on!

These 9 boys have stuck with scouting from 1st through 5th grade and achieved all their ranks.  7 of them will continue on to Boy Scouts together.

"Crossing over" into Boy Scouts - this involves a special ceremony and walking over a  bridge or tight rope.

Archdiocesan Religion Bee

As winner of the 3rd-5th grade religion bee for Queen of Angels, Nicholas represented his school at the archdiocesan bee at the chancery.  All Catholic schools from the diocese send a child - about 20 in all.  NICHOLAS WON FIRST PLACE!!!!!!  WE ARE SO VERY PROUD OF HIM!!!!
His buddy Adam, the runner up from QA, was there to support as the alternate.

Other Random February Fun

Another blessed busy month.....

A family Rosary Hike at Leita Thompson
Grace and Nicholas both served mass one Sunday and happened to be paired together for the hand washing :-)
Grace is on an Odyssey of the Mind team for the first time this year (more to come about that in another post). This was her sheep costume she made all by herself - over 800 cotton balls glued on a hoodie.  The boot is because she "breaks"her leg in their skit.
Learning about the weight of air in scouts
The third grade school production this year was a Famous American Wax Museum followed by a drama/musical presentation.  It was absolutely awesome!!!  All the parents and the other classes were able to walk through the wax museum row by row.
Grace was Shoni Shimmel - a Native American All Star WNBA player.

They sang several songs and each "famous American" had a 1 minute spot to tell all about themselves
Grace reading to her kindergarten "book buddy"
Nicholas' fifth grade school production this year was entitled "The Upper Room."  It was a musical drama showing the life of Christ from his childhood to the Last Supper.  It was an awesome way to bridge the gap between the school Nativity production at Christmas time and the Living Stations of the Cross by the 8th graders at Easter time.
Nicholas played the groom at the wedding feast of Cana.
Nicholas' science project where they had to create a 3D plant or animal cell - he made a cake!
Found Samuel praying the rosary on his own on our bed in the middle of the day one day.
