Nicholas 3 1/2 Years Old

At three and half years old, Nicholas finds joy in most any activity and is like a sponge soaking up information. Here are some details about him at this age:

* He just recently started comfortably holding a pencil the proper way.

* He can write his name in capital letters on his own, quite legibly, with the exception sometimes of the letter S that he still struggles a bit with. He can also write several other letters on his own that are made with straight lines. The ones with curved lines are more challenging for him.

* He enjoys coloring, writing, stamping and doing crafts now more than ever. His attention span for these quiet sitting activities has really increased lately. He is getting much better about coloring in the lines but doesn't always do it consistently. He has started drawing pictures of people as well.

* His imagination is enormous! He spends a large part of the day pretending..... to be a fireman going to an emergency....a farmer caring for his animals.....a cook making us meals in the play kitchen....that we are all a family of elephants or leopards.....he makes up stories and songs all day long too. He frequently makes animated calls on his play phone to "the men" any time Grace does something he doesn't like like knocking down his block towers, etc.

* He has two imaginary friends whom he calls "my little boy and girl." He gives them rides in the laundry basket, makes food and pours drinks for them, and even puts them in time out when they misbehave.

* He builds with all kinds of blocks and mag-formers frequently and recently his creations have become much more elaborate and complex. He likes to leave them up for days or weeks and is hurt if we take them down too soon.

* He still loves books...listening to them read or flipping through them himself.

* He has recently taken a strong interest in playing educational computer games on his little laptop and on his Leapster.

* He remains a fantastic eater....still haven't found a single food he will not eat.

* He enjoys carrying on a conversation with anyone, known or stranger. He talks all day long!

* Our biggest challenge with him remains discipline with his strong willed nature. We are particularly working on the talking back disrespectfully and hitting, trying to end these behaviors in a firm loving manner.

* He no longer needs pull-ups at night, but wears underwear 24 hours a day.

*He has officially finished with naps. He usually wakes around 6:30 am and is in bed by 8pm.

*He still loves being outdoors. Some his favorite activities outside include playing soccer, "running at the river" with daddy, playing on the playground, riding his bike, and hunting for special things (eg: rocks, acorns) to fill his pockets with.

* He likes and requests to go to Mass, and is usually pretty well behaved there. He is very good about remembering his prayers and has even been known to remind his babysitters to say their blessing before meals or tell them they need a longer one :-)

* He is so full of love, regularly telling us several times a day how much he loves us. Many times he elaborates "Mommy, I love you more than...." or "bigger than..." etc. He still likes to be held and snuggled and he gives lots of hugs and kisses.

The past three and a half years have been a joy with Nicholas at each stage and age. Though he certainly challenges us at times, he is a loving boy, with a huge heart, whom we love with all our hearts! Thank you God for Nicholas!
